Henderson resident Desiré Smith was recently appointed as the chair of the continuing education council for the National Association of Legal Assistants.
“NALA continues to be THE paralegal association,” Desiré said in a prepared statement from NALA. “I cannot think of a better way to honor this profession than by accepting the appointment as Chairperson of the Continuing Education Council.”
Reached by the Hendersonian, Smith, who works as a paralegal at Vowels Law PLC, said her continuing education chair position will require her to edit NALA’s quarterly legal digest, “Facts and Findings.”
She’ll also oversee finding authors to submit their work to the quarterly and find qualified attorneys and paralegals to offer continuing education opportunities, she said.
She’ll also be charged with planning and coordinating all of NALA’s continuing education efforts, which includes finding new platforms for education.
Smith, who has lived in Henderson for 12 years, has been a paralegal for 12 years, the last five of those at Vowels Law, she said.
She said a good portion of her work at the firm revolves around conducting legal research and writing of federal black lung cases.
Before becoming chair, Smith served three years on NALA’s continuing education council, said a release from the organization.
NALA has a national membership of 17,000 people.
