A Holy Name School teacher has been charged with first-degree assault-domestic violence.
Heidi Todd, 52, was arrested on Friday and booked into the Henderson County Detention Center. A $1,000 bond was set and Todd bonded out on Saturday, according to the HCDC website.
According to Henderson Police Department Sgt. Bill Russell, the incident occurred at Todd’s home. When the student came to school, an injury was noticed, Russell said.
The school resource officer at Holy Name called HPD, and officers were sent to the school, Russell said.
Russell said the injury was not serious enough from keeping the child from going on a field trip on Friday. When the child returned, police questioned the child, Russell said.
Russell said Holy Name officials questioned Todd and then administration sent her home with the understanding law enforcement would go to her house to question her.
No incident occurred at the school, Russell said.
For the incident to be considered a first-degree assault, two conditions are needed—a serious physical injury occurred and it happened by means of a deadly weapon or dangerous instrument, according to Kentucky Revised Statutes.
Russell said the child’s injury occurred near the eye, which constitutes a serious physical injury, and was carried out by using her hand, which in this case is legally classified as a dangerous instrument.
The school sent out a message to parents on Friday afternoon saying that Todd was placed on administrative leave. Holy Name was also securing a certified substitute teacher for Todd’s class.
“We ask for your prayers for everyone involved as this matter is handled by the proper authorities,” the message said.
