Henderson County got production from its biggest offensive weapons and had its best defensive performance of the season Friday night, cruising past Daviess County 42-3 in Owensboro.
Senior quarterback Brody Belt accounted for all six Colonel touchdowns, throwing for four and rushing for two, while sophomore Jackson Loveless and senior Hezekiah Harris continued to establish themselves as Henderson’s receiver tandem.
Harris caught six passes for 63 yards and two touchdowns, while Loveless added four catches for 84 yards and two scores. Together, the pair accounted for 147 of Henderson County’s 194 passing yards and all four of Belt’s touchdown passes.
“They’re really good,” Henderson County head coach John Elliott said. “If we can get the ball to them consistently and give Brody some time, then we’ve got a chance with those guys. Tonight the protection was pretty good. Brody made a couple plays with his feet, but he’s capable of that. That’s our meal ticket, so we’re going to keep going with those guys.”
Loveless entered the night with 404 receiving yards, ranking 11th in Kentucky and fourth in Class 6A. Harris, meanwhile, followed up a two-touchdown performance against Gibson Southern with two more scores Friday.
The Colonels had to wait longer than expected to get started. The game had already been scheduled for a later-than-usual kickoff because of a referee shortage before another delay pushed the start back an additional hour.
When play finally began, Daviess County opened with an onside kick that took an odd bounce and was recovered at the Henderson County 24-yard line. The Panthers moved inside the 10, but Henderson’s defense held, with Christian Haygan making a tackle for loss before a field goal attempt was partially blocked.
“Obviously, it wasn’t a normal pregame by any stretch,” Elliott said. “When they did that kick, and we kind of messed it up, they recovered it. I told the coaches, nobody’s on anybody. Just keep coaching, keep playing, and things will turn our way.”
Henderson responded with an 80-yard touchdown drive capped by a 1-yard Belt sneak and gradually took control from there.
The Colonels led 28-0 at halftime after Harris scored twice and Loveless hauled in a 35-yard touchdown in the final minute of the second quarter. Henderson mixed quick passes, quarterback options and deeper shots throughout the first half, while also moving Loveless around the formation and occasionally lining him up in the backfield.
Belt finished 14-of-24 for 194 yards and four touchdowns while rushing 10 times for 72 yards and two more scores. Over five games, the senior quarterback has thrown 14 touchdowns against just one interception, one of the more impressive ratios in recent history for Colonel quarterbacks.
Henderson also got production from some less established options. Senior Landon Smith got on the stat sheet for the first time this season with two catches for 23 yards. Smith, a basketball player enjoying his first season on the gridiron, can offer some relief from Harris and Loveless while giving the Colonels another option with his 6-foot-2 frame.
Senior tight end Christian Haygan also made a couple of catches for 24 yards. He has been a consistent pass-catcher and blocker for the Colonels in his third year as a starter.
Kingston Shidler returned to the lineup and rushed nine times for 44 yards, while Kieran Cole added 24 yards on two carries.
The Colonels finished with 354 total yards and 160 rushing yards, while Daviess County managed just 176 total yards and 65 on the ground.
“We challenged our defense this week,” Elliott said. “We’ve been averaging giving up 400 yards of offense a week, 40 points. I just challenged them that we cannot play winning football giving up those kinds of statistics. Tonight, I thought we did better.”
Sophomore linebacker Parker Shappell led Henderson with nine tackles. Jonathan Langley added seven, Kieran Cole had six, and Javian Young and Spencer Kellen each finished with five.
Shappell’s increased role has become even more important with starting linebacker Jake Hall out Friday with a leg injury.
“Parker, we added him to the lineup a couple weeks ago,” Elliott said. “Defensively, we made some changes and went to a three-linebacker defense. He’s been in there now for the last three weeks, and things are really coming together for him with what it takes to be successful on Friday night.”
The win also came with a cleaner offensive performance after penalties erased two touchdowns and stalled several drives in last week’s loss to Gibson Southern.
“We had a lot of penalties on offense last week,” Harris said. “We had to cut that down, and we executed and got the win.”
Friday’s delay also continued an unusual trend in the Henderson-Daviess County series after last year’s meeting was delayed before Henderson escaped with a 7-6 victory.
This time, the Colonels left little doubt once the game got going, holding Daviess County out of the end zone and improving to 2-3 with the 42-3 win.
Next week, the Colonels come home to face Central Hardin (0-5) at 7 p.m.
