Henderson state Sen. Robby Mills was elected by fellow Republicans Friday as the majority caucus chair.

“I’m excited,” Mills said. “It puts me in the leadership loop.”

Mills, a former Henderson City Commissioner, said getting into a leadership role has been a goal of his since he was elected on the state level eight years ago.  He was first elected in 2016, winning the 11th District House of Representatives seat. In 2018, he won the 4th District Senate seat, representing Henderson, Hopkins, Union and Webster counties.

As caucus chair, Mills will be one of five majority leaders that meet and decide how legislation moves. He’ll also be in the leadership meetings deciding what legislation to bring forward and what gets priority, he said.

Mills said the upcoming short session, which will begin in January, most likely will not be as busy as last year’s session. He said a big issue will be figuring out how to improve housing opportunities in the state, perhaps through incentives or grants for developers.

The legislature could also make tweaks or changes to the state budget that was passed in the last session, he said.

He said Republicans will hold a caucus retreat in mid-December when priorities will be finalized for the next legislative session.

The other elected Senate leaders include:

Senate President: Senate President Robert Stivers, R-Manchester, represents the 25th Senate District, including Clay, Jackson, Knox, McCreary, Owsley and Whitley counties. Stivers was re-elected as Senate President.  Stivers is now the longest-serving Senate president in Kentucky history with this election.

President Pro Tempore: Sen. David Givens, R-Greensburg, represents the 9th Senate District, which includes Barren, Edmonson, Green, and Hart Counties, as well as northwestern Warren County. Givens was re-elected as President Pro Tempore.

Majority Floor Leader: Sen. Max Wise, R-Campbellsville, represents the 16th Senate District, including Adair, Allen, Metcalfe, Monroe, and Taylor Counties and eastern Warren County.

Majority Whip: Sen. Mike Wilson, R-Bowling Green, represents the 32nd Senate District, including Logan, Simpson, and Todd Counties and southern Warren County.
