Welcome to the second issue of the Hendersonian. Last month’s inaugural edition was a success, and we received many compliments and words of encouragement. Thank you. We intend to not only continue to put out a quality product, but to improve on our early efforts.

The big news occurred late in May when two escaped inmates from a prison facility in Allen County, Ohio, were spotted by Henderson law enforcement officers early in the morning of May 24. A car chase and then crash ensued, with one escapee, James Lee, caught, and another, Bradley Gillespie, getting away. A five-day manhunt followed, ending May 28 when a boater on the Ohio River spotted a body, and local authorities confirmed it was Gillespie’s. The manhunt was intensive and exhaustive, and Police Chief Sean McKinney called it the longest five days of his 26-year law enforcement career.

We, like other Hendersonians, are glad it’s over.

In other news this month at the Hendersonian, we’re introducing a Wellness page, which we hope will become a monthly staple. The Wellness page will include all aspects of good health throughout the year but will be particularly focused on mental health and addiction. In Dr. Deborah Bradford’s Wellness page column this month, we learn that more than 30% of U.S. adults are affected by mental health disorders each year.

With those statistics in mind, it’s safe to assume you or someone you love is suffering. Take care of yourself and check on your loved ones. One of the reasons this page was added this month is to normalize these issues and to let people know it is OK to seek help. And, there are trained professionals who can help and want to help.

Finally, it’s that time of year again! Henderson’s signature event, the W.C. Handy Blues and Barbecue Festival, will be June 14-17 at Audubon Mill Park. Bring your favorite lawn chair, find your spot, sit back and wait for the magic to happen.
