In the heat of summer, it can be a welcome thing to escape the elements and “chill out.”
The Friends of the Henderson County Public Library is offering such an opportunity on July 12 with a new take on its annual membership meeting.
“Something Cool: Travel to Antarctica with Steve Wylie” is a travelogue program about a visit to the continent at the bottom of the world, and will be presented as part of the annual meeting, which will also offer FOL members an opportunity to renew their membership and for new ones to join.
The 2 p.m. event in the Pittsburg Tank & Tower Suite on the second floor of the library’s new addition also will offer some “cool refreshments.”
In the meeting, the FOL leadership will talk about some of the ways the organization supports the library with their membership dues and fundraisers, including funding for Summer Reading programs, co-sponsoring author events and assisting with the purchase of specialized equipment and resources (such as the devices added to the library last year that turn treasured snapshots, film slides and tape recordings into new media.)
The FOL’s fundraisers have included such activities as a recent “Read Between the Wines” guided wine-tasting event, concession sales at the Preston Art Center and an ongoing Used Book Sale located in an area at the library’s Washington Street entrance.
The organization offers manpower for the library’s many events and provides staff support throughout the year, including an annual holiday luncheon.
Brochures about joining the Friends of the Library will be available at “Something Cool” and also can be picked up during library hours at the Circulation Desk.
