Bill Latta honored as 2024 E. Starling Holloway Insuror of the Year Award

The state’s largest insurance trade association has named Bill Latta as the recipient of the 2024 E. Starling Holloway Insuror of the Year, according to a release from Big I Kentucky.

The award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the insurance industry, enhanced its ideals and reputation and demonstrated exceptional service to their community, state and country, said the release.

Latta, the director of insurance for Field & Main Insurance in Henderson, has been a member of Big I Kentucky for over 30 years, serving as president of the association in 2013. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Latta has also been involved in many community endeavors, including serving as president of Henderson Rotary, president of Jaycee, and holding board positions with the Henderson Chamber, Field & Main Bank, Bank Trust Bank and Henderson State Bank, said the release.

Latta has also organized the Henderson Flat Boat Races and is a volunteer for the W.C. Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival, said the release.

Riverview School invites community to Monday event

Riverview School is inviting the community to its ribbon cutting and holiday open house from 4-6 p.m. on Monday at the school (133 S. Water St.).

School officials will showcase the school’s updated curriculum and branding, according to information sent from the school. They will also celebrate donors and show appreciation for the support received from the community.

Airport director says extension project starting soon

Emily Herron, the new director of the Henderson City-County Airport, said the wait for the airport’s runway extension should come to an end next year.

Herron told the Henderson County Fiscal Court that work on the 1,000-foot extension will begin in the late spring. Once completed, it will leave the runway at 6,500 feet, which she said will allow larger airplanes to fly into the airport, which is in Geneva.

She also said that the longer runway will help local businesses who host out-of-town industry partners that may need to land larger planes at the airport.

Herron said there’s also a possibility that the airport can host an air show or air expo in the future.

County looks to obtain a grant to pay for the match of a grant

The Henderson County Fiscal Court approved a request from County Engineer Nick Stallings to pursue a grant that will be used to pay for the matching portion of a grant that will be used to fund a road improvement program.

In September, Stallings informed the court that he had secured funding from the Safe Streets and Roads For All Grant Program, which was established in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and is overseen by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The amount coming from the federal grant program to the county will be $3.3 million. But to receive that, the county needs to provide a 20% match, either with in-kind contributions or cash, Stallings said.

The court approved a resolution that allows an application for $829,418 to the state Cabinet for Economic Development’s GRANT Program of 2024, which is a program that funds entities that need money for matches to grants.

The total $4.1 million will go toward improvements to county roads with the aim of making them safer, Stallings said. The improvements include widening roads, cutting trees near roads, putting signs up and moving ditches away from roads, he said.
