LETTER TO THE EDITOR: ‘Citizens deserve infrastructure management that respects basic functionality and human life’

Dear Editor:

As a dedicated Henderson, Kentucky resident and educator at the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville, I write not to merely vent frustration, but to address a critical and rapidly escalating threat to public safety caused by the ongoing  left lane closure and inspections on the southbound US-41 Twin Bridges.

Over the past week, despite consistently leaving my home 90 minutes early for a routine commute, I have spent over 12 hours trapped in stationary traffic. Yesterday evening (Aug. 17) cost me over three hours, during which time I witnessed a harrowing accident: a truck approaching congestion at high speed flipped into the air then crashed into a vehicle trapped in gridlock. With other motorists, I parked on the shoulder as people got out of their cars and ran to the scene. Delay that emergency responders faced trying to reach the scene was entirely foreseeable.

And so to glibly advise commuters that we should simply prepare for “significant delays” is irresponsible and unacceptable. This is not a matter of minor inconvenience. It is a structural, systemic failure of traffic management that actively endangers motorists’ health, well-being and safety.

Expecting us to surrender an extra three or four hours of our day—cutting into both professional and family time—is unfeasible and economically damaging.

I respectfully request prompt response detailing what immediate, tangible measures will be taken now to remediate this crisis during the Twin Bridge southbound lane closure. Citizens deserve infrastructure management that respects basic functionality and human life.

Dr. Melanie Lee

Henderson
