Funds raised from the 24th annual Brain Injury Adventure Camp turkey trot go toward paying for all the different activities and programs provided by the camp.
The cost for the 5K race on Thanksgiving morning in downtown Henderson is $25. Ellen Redding, race organizer and BIAC board president, said about 300-350 race participants are expected.
People wanting to sign up can go to biacky.org. Redding said that Monday was the deadline to sign up with the guarantee of getting a T-shirt, but she said there’s the possibility of getting one because she ordered extra.
The Brain Injury Adventure Camp is located in Robards and hosts all kinds of events, from local sports teams’ and corporate business’ team building to weddings.
It also hosts a special needs prom each spring for tri-state students and in 2025, it will again host two traumatic brain injury survivor camps, Redding said. These will be the first TBI survivor camps since T.K. Johns died six years ago, Redding said.
T.K. Johns suffered a TBI while snowboarding in Colorado in 2009. After that, his father Tim decided to build a TBI camp here like those he and T.K. visited in Colorado, according to the organization’s website. The camp now has two miles in trails, a low ropes team building course, a high ropes challenge course and activities to support the needs of the community and the surrounding area, said the website.
Redding said sponsorships and the money raised from the turkey trot pay for the activities and programs at the BIAC.
Racers can also sign up for the trot before the race on Thanksgiving morning. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. The race starts at 9 a.m.
