Malaysia Martin recognized with Community Spotlight Award

Malaysia Martin was recognized with the City of Henderson’s Community Spotlight Award from September.

Martin battled addiction and later graduated from the WARM Center. Later, Martin started Next Chapter Youth, a teen outreach and recovery program for those 13 to 18 years old. The program held its first meeting on Sept. 6 with more than 50 people attending. The program now meets weekly at the Recovery Resource Club of Henderson.

Martin said that she knows what it’s like to struggle and wonder if life can change.

“I proved that it can,” she said, adding that she wants her program to allow youth to have a person in their corner before they find themselves in places she ended up.

  • Henderson Police Department clerk Janet Campbell was recognized for working 20 years with the City of Henderson. She thanked God for putting her in the position. Henderson Mayor Brad Staton commended her for always being a welcoming face at the police department.

Lions Club awards

The Henderson Lions Club presented four awards at its 2026 Annual Awards Dinner on Sept. 17.

Maggie Collier received the Melvin Jones Fellowship, the highest honor bestowed by the Lions Club International Foundation.

Collier joined the club in 2017 and served as Lions Auction chairman from 2018 to 2026. From 2019 to 2026, net proceeds from what is now a one-night live auction jumped 46%, which helps fund the club’s scholarship and nonprofit grants programs.

Collier served as club president in 2022-2023. She today helps take care of the more than 100 vendors for the Henderson Lions Arts & Crafts Festival.

“It’s easy to serve in this club because it’s with people who care as much about Henderson as I do,” she said.

Chuck Stinnett was honored as Lion of the Year for his initiative to revive the former printed Lions Roar weekly newsletter into an emailed version that provides members with a summary of what guest speakers had to say and more. He has produced more than 200 weekly editions since late 2021.

Stinnett has served on the club board for seven years and as president in 2023-2024.

Victoria Smit was honored as Cub of the Year for co-chairing the Henderson Lions’ Tri-Fest lemon shakeup booth, and will now serve as chair of the Henderson Lions Live Auction.

James Runion was recognized for outstanding service as immediate past president.
