Sterling Griffin, a 62-year member of the local Moose, says that the fraternal organization’s sign at the corner of Second and Green streets had, until recently, gone unlit for at least the past 25-30 years.

Saturday evening, though, Moose Lodge #732 members were scheduled to gather for an official relighting of the sign, which according to Griffin has been in existence for as long as the building, which was completed in 1950.

Some years ago, one of the sign’s gas bulbs went out and then another so that it disrupted the lighted sign’s appearance until it was eventually all turned off, Griffin said.

Griffin said Moose member (and Henderson County magistrate) Keith Berry spearheaded a fundraising drive that raised more than $9,000 to get the sign re-lit.

“We’ve been wanting to do this for years,” Griffin said.
