The Henderson County Clerk’s Office says that about 40% of registered voters turned out for Tuesday’s general election, putting the turn out slightly higher than it was four years ago when most of the same slate of positions was on the ballot.
The official number was 40.6% slightly better than 2022’s 39.4% when the big race was for county-judge-executive, when Brad Schneider defeated Dorsey Ridley 8,267 votes to 5,819 votes, for a total of 14,086 voters.
The number of voters in that race was slightly higher than those who cast a ballot in this year’s race, Timmy Dunn versus Les Jenkins-Mackey. In that race, 7,946 voted for Dunn while 5,407 were for Jenkins-Mackey–a total of 13,353 voters.
Carrie Smith, the county clerk election deputy, said she felt the turnout was “pretty good.”
Smith was one of the candidates running for a seat. She ran unopposed to take over the retiring Henderson County Clerk Renesa Abner.
After a long career in the county clerk’s office, Tuesday marked the last election she worked for the office.
She said the day was so busy that she really didn’t have any time to think about it being her last election. She said she is grateful for all the help from all the volunteers and staff on the elections that she’s worked.
Abner said there was one minor glitch on election day, when electricity very briefly went out in the morning at the Bend Gate Elementary School polling place. The only problem from that was a printer had to be restarted after the electricity came back on, she said.
