The first Saturday in May is a day of celebration for fans of “eating local.”
It’s opening day for the Henderson Farmers Market.
Growers and producers of items available in the early season will be set up from 8 a.m. to noon (as long as supplies last) starting on Saturday, May 3.
The market will be open this year from May 3 through October 31 on Tuesday, Fridays and Saturday and will offer local and fresh produce, honey, wine, meat, bakery goods and more.
Early in the season shoppers are likely to find a variety of lettuces and greens, asparagus, green onions, farm-raised eggs, plant starts, fresh herbs, bakery goods, jams, jellies, preserves and honey, among other things.
As the growing season advances, the variety of items and number of producers at the market grows, too.
The market location is the Cates-Porter Farmers Market Pavilion at Henderson County Fairgrounds located on Sam Ball Way near the intersection of Garden Mile and Airline roads.
But here’s a big heads up for traveling to the market this season. Airline Road will be closed for much of the market season by construction work on the I-69 overpass. Garden Mile Road will be the way to access the Henderson County Fairgrounds from the city.
