Kentucky State Police Post 16 is warning residents about a scam involving requests for personal information and money.
According to a KSP release, some of these scams have victims deposit money into bitcoin machines or send money via other methods.
Other scams purport to be law enforcement officials or government officials requesting personal information over the phone or by emails with fake documents, said the release. These scams involve unsolicited texts or phone calls to victims’ phones requesting money and/or personal information.
KSP advises people to not respond to these scams by clicking on the link or responding to the text message.
KSP said it wants to inform the public of these continued scams and encourage the public to contact authorities should they experience or become the victim of these types of scams.
Additionally, law enforcement officials will never request a person to send money in any method during a legitimate investigation. Further, any law enforcement officer or agent will never conduct investigations entirely over the phone without identifying themselves in person first with the proper badge and credentials, said the release.
Finally, KSP said these scams utilize urgency and fake investigators to lure their victims into providing personal information or funds to the scammers. Once funds and personal information is sent to the scammers, they are impossible to recover.
